How To Choose a Lacrosse Stick

Lacrosse is quite a popular sport in North America where it originated. It is a file game involving two opposing teams with ten or twelve players each. The primary objective of each team is to send the ball, using a specialized stick known as the crosse, into the goal of the opposing team. The one with the highest score for a given amount of minutes is declared the winner. Many believe that the stick, or crosse in particular, is the single most important equipment in playing the game. Finding the most perfect fit would often lead to you and your team’s success. The crosse comes in a variety of designs, shapes and sizes, thus making it hard for you to select the one that fits you best. Here are some tips on how to choose a lacrosse stick.

  • Be familiar with the parts of your crosse. The lacrosse stick should measure within the range of 40 to 72 inches for males and 36 to 43 inches for females. It should be hooked on top, with its strings woven of gut, rawhide, linen cord, or clock string that is strung across its hooked portion in a diagonal manner to form an interwoven network. These basically make up the shaft and the pocket. The shaft is usually a composite or metal alloy and the triangular head, containing the pocket of interwoven network of strings.
  • Examine the pocket. Pay particular attention to the type of pocket on your crosse. A mesh pocket provides better ball control while doing other types of movement. On the other hand, the traditional woven pocket does not give great control but makes up for it by offering accuracy when passing and shooting, and is thus recommended for more advanced players. Also, look for a crosse that has two or less shooting strings that are tight to provide good control of the ball. Keep in mind that synthetic thongs are better than leather ones, which are generally not as durable as the former. Thongs are the four or five strips usually strung lengthwise over the head of the stick. In similar manner, the depth of the pocket affects how a particular player passes the ball. Deeper pockets are generally used for short passes while shallower ones are fit for long passes.
  • Measure the weight of the stick. Practicality is the reason behind why heavier sticks are used for defense and lighter ones are best for attacking. Weigh your lacrosse stick and estimate against a standard weight. From this, you could decide which mode your crosse is best suited for.
  • Measure the length of the stick. The length of the crosse depends on the height of the player using the said equipment. Make sure that you find the lacrosse stick that is best suited for your height. Since each position in the field requires a certain range of measurements, make sure that you play the position that you are most comfortable and at ease when using the crosse.
  • Inspect the overall appearance of the crosse. Make sure that the stick is free of any cracks or damages. Examine both the head and shaft for any abnormalities.

With these tips in mind, you can already choose the lacrosse stick that best fits you. Lastly, remember that you can choose to purchase from an online specialty vendor or any sporting goods store.
