How To Relax a Stomach

When some people feel stressed, they can literally feel it in their gut. Sometimes, people may have a stomachache because of something they ate. Whether it’s indigestion, hyperacidity or gas, one way to cope with an upset stomach is to help the body relax.

If your tummy is feeling weird or tense, here are things you can do so you can relax your stomach.

  • Find out the cause. Before you reach for that bottle of antiacids and pop a pill in your mouth, take a moment to find out what is causing your pain. Assess yourself and find out where the pain is located in your stomach. Certain areas correspond to specific internal organs. Think about what you ate or what you were doing prior to the onset of the pain. This way, you can treat the pain properly and avoid putting yourself in the same situation again.
  • Lie down. When you’re in pain, you need to listen to your body. Stop what you are doing and rest. It may help to lie down in a fetal position or to lie on your tummy. Find a comfortable position and take a moment to rest.
  • Place a warm compress. Placing a warm bottle or hot compress on your stomach can soothe it immensely. Before you take medication, try this approach first. Leave the compress on your tummy for as long as necessary. If you’re gassy, you should feel some relief in a few minutes.
  • Breathe. Slow down your breathing. When you are in pain, it helps to ensure that your body is properly oxygenated. Breathe in through your nose and contract your diaphragm as you do so. Release the air and expand your tummy. This will ensure that you are maximizing the amount of oxygen in your system.
  • Massage your tummy. Massage your tummy using smooth strokes. Follow a circular motion around your belly button to relieve the pain in your stomach. Use some liniment if you prefer.
  • Drink warm tea. Drink a cup of hot chamomile tea or green tea. This has a soothing and cleansing effect in the body.
  • Take care of your bodily needs. If you have a tummy ache, you may need to defecate. Constipation may be the cause of your stomach pain.
  • Be mindful of what you eat. Next time, don’t overindulge when you eat. Certain food combinations or certain food items such as citrus fruits or spicy food can cause an upset stomach. Just because it’s on the table doesn’t mean you have to eat it if it’s not good for you.
  • Meditate. Relax your mind and imagine a cleansing white light flushing out your body of all the toxins and bad energy you have collected. Close your eyes, breathe slowly and think about calm and peaceful thoughts. Let go of stress, anger, frustration and resentment.
  • Medicate. As a last resort, take the proper medication to relieve your stomach pain. If natural means don’t work, you may need to take some medicine. Make sure you take the minimal dose and do so under the doctor’s supervision.

If tummy aches and upset stomachs are a regular occurrence for you, go to the doctor. It may be an indication or symptom of a more serious problem that you need to address. You don’t need to live with pain in your gut on a daily basis. Learn to relax your stomach so you can resume your normal activities.
