Most people do not think of removing their refrigerator door. In reality, however, removing a refrigerator door is actually a lot easier than you think, and serves various purposes. You can remove the fridge door if you want to give the fridge a very thorough cleaning, if you want to replace the rubber sidings on the fridge door, or if you want to fix a lopsided fridge door. Here are some simple steps that you need to follow in order to easily remove a fridge door.
- Unscrew the hinge plate. Start by removing the cover to the hinge plate that is found on the top and the bottom part of the fridge door, on the side where the door is hinged to the fridge itself. Remember that not all refrigerators will have the hinge plate. If it has a hinge plate, simply use a putty knife to gently pry out the cover. If it does not, you can go to directly removing the hinge plate screws. To remove the screws, you simply need to use a Phillips screw driver. There are usually either four or three screws that keep the hinge plate in place.
- Remove the hinge pin. After you have finished removing the hinge plate, the next step is to remove the hinge pin. The hinge pin is usually placed just between the hinges in order to keep the hinges together. To remove the hinge pin, all you need is to grab the top part of the hinge pin and then pull it upwards until the entire length of the hinge pin has been removed. This is usually quite easy because the hinge pin will likely have a tab on the top that you can grab onto.
- Repeat. Now that you have removed one hinge, all you need to do is to repeat the same procedure for the other hinges in the fridge door. Remember, some refrigerators will have more hinges than others .there are actually some refrigerators that have as much as three hinges for each door. Remove the bottom door first, and then remove the freezer door. If you want to keep your food from spoiling, try to get some plastic sheets that you can use to cover up the fridge and keep the cold from escaping. The some procedure needs to be applied if you are trying to remove the doors to a double door refrigerator.
- Lift and remove. After you have finished removing the hinges, all you need to do is to lift up the door and then push it outwards. Repeat for all of the doors that you are trying to remove. Once the door has been removed, you should be able to clean it, repair it, and do whatever you need to do to the refrigerator doors. To replace the doors, simply push and insert back into the refrigerator frame and then attach the pin, the hinge plates, the screws, and the hinge cap.
With these steps, you should be able to easily remove and replace your fridge doors. The entire process will only take you a couple of minutes, and all you need is a screwdriver and a putty knife.
