How To Repel House Flies

Flies in your home? Not only are they extremely unsettling to have around the house, they are real health hazards too. So if you’re currently experiencing some nasty fly situation, it’s important that you do some tried-and-tested techniques for getting rid of these unwanted house guests, as soon as possible.

  • Keep your house clean. Do know that effective and long-term fly elimination all begins with locating and removing the sites where they breed and feed. House flies in particular are greatly attracted to garbage, rotting fruits and vegetables, decaying organic material and manure. If you have any of these either in your home or right in your surrounding areas (such as your garden or backyard), the sign of flies should be a call for you to get rid of these fly breeding sites immediately.
  • Keep the flies away. This is another great solution that will address the problem right at its roots. Invest in window and door screens that will keep any flies and bugs out of your home. Make sure also that you patch any holes that appear in your window screens.
  • Use some organic and natural fly repellents. One natural ingredient that you could use is citrus, which flies naturally find repulsive. Get pomanders and hang them onto your doors and windows; you could make your own by placing peelings of citrus fruits (such as oranges) inside thin cloth bags. Instead of citrus, you could also use garlic cloves (either whole or crushed) or pine bough; place these inside thin cloth bags and hang them up doorways.

Another natural fly repellent is basil. Simply place small potted basil plants by your windowsill to keep the flies away.

  • Make a natural fly insect repellent made of natural oils. If you want not just a solution to your house fly situation but a great house air freshener too, you could concoct your own effective fly repellent using essential oils. Combine a few drops of the following essential oils in a container (dilute them all with water): eucalyptus, citronella, lemongrass, peppermint and pennyroyal. Then, add in a few drops of lavender, undiluted. Once you have created this solution, get a piece of clean sponge and let this sponge absorb the solution. Place the sponge in a clean tin can. After one day, you could place the tin can by your window entrance, open it, and let it work to keep the flies away. If you’re pregnant, however, you should avoid this step, because some essential oils may be harmful to your baby.
  • Use fly paper. Of course you could buy commercial fly paper, but if you’re looking for more natural versions, you could make your own. All you’d need are the following: ½ cup sugar, ¼ cup corn syrup and some brown paper bags. Cut the paper bags into long, medium-sized strips. Combine the sugar and corn syrup in a bowl. Apply the mixture to the strips using a blunt knife, and position these strips around fly-infested areas.

It’s so easy to get rid of house flies that there’s no reason for you to keep on tolerating them. So keep those house flies out and you’ll find your home a more peaceful, healthful and relaxing place to live in! Good luck, and hope this helped!
