Sewing a wedding gown is the same as sewing regular clothes except for the fabric that you will use. What’s even better is you can put whatever details you want and make it unique. Here are the steps on how to sew a zipper on your bridal gown.
- Prepare the things that you will need in sewing zipper on your bridal gown. The top and bottom part of the wedding gown which have already been sewn, zipper, hook and eye closure, beeswax, thread, needle and iron.
- Sew the top and bottom part of the wedding gown together. Ensure that the opening on the top and bottom part where you will sew the zipper are aligned. Not all gowns have a top and bottom part. If your gown is in one piece, make sure that the size is comfortable for you before sewing the zipper. Fit the gown that you put together, whether it’s one piece or two-piece, and put together the openings so you can see if the size is right for you. Make necessary adjustments to get the right size. Once you get the right fit then you can go on with sewing the zipper for your wedding gown.
- Sew the zipper of the gown. Lay the wedding gown on the surface where you are working making sure that the right side is visible. Open the zipper and position this under the opening. Baste the zipper so it will stay in place when sewing the zipper. This is a temporary stitch, which you can remove afterwards. You don’t have to use a sewing machine when sewing the zipper. You can do this by hand. Apply beeswax on the thread that you will use for sewing and insert the thread through the needle. Start sewing one side of the zipper starting from the top going through the window. Make sure to start sewing on the wrong side. Do this carefully and make sure to smooth out any bulk fabric or wrinkles as you go up. Once done with one side, sew the other side, again, making sure to smooth out the wrinkles that you will see as you sew to the top part. After sewing both sides, sew the hook and eye closure on top of the opening.
