A jack plane is a tool that is used for smoothing surfaces and edges of wood. This is an essential tool for people who are working on carpentry projects and other do it yourself projects at home. Learning how to use the jack plane may be hard at first but it will get easier to use once you get the hang of it. Here are the instructions that you can follow when using a jack plane.
- Set up the sole of the plane. The first thing that you have to do is to set up the sole of the jack plane. The sole of the jack plane is the bottom part that is flat. You have to make sure that the sole of the jack plane is set upon a flat surface so that you can get clean and accurate cuts as you are using the jack plane. To set up the sole of the plane, get a permanent marker and then color the surface of the sole. Afterwards, use sandpaper to sand off the surface until you have removed the permanent marker.
- Replace all the components. Replace all the components of the jack plane. Make sure that the plates are on tightly. Secure them in place with a screwdriver. After mounting the components, you can test the blade of the jack plane.
- Test the jack plane. Get a piece of scrap wood and try to smooth the surface. You should end up with smooth and thin wood shavings from using the jack plane. If you want to adjust the settings of the jack plane, all you have to do is to turn the depth adjustment on the jack plane. This will determine how deep the cut of the blade will be on the wood. You can get thinner or thicker wood shavings depending on your settings. When you are happy with the results, you can move on to the next step.
- Using the jack plane. Now you are ready to use the jack plane. Secure the block of wood that you are going to work on to the clamp on your work area. Make sure that the piece of wood is properly secured in place. Test to see if it does not budge when you move it. Place one hand at the head of the jack plane and use the other hand to hold the handle located at the back of the jack plane. You can now start smoothing down the edges or the surface of the piece of wood that you have.
These are the steps that you can follow when using the jack plane. You may want to use protective work gloves when using the jack plane to avoid having wood splinters on your hand when handling rough wood that is not yet smoothened. Make sure that all the components of the jack plane are in good condition and that the blade is well sharpened so that you can come up with a smooth finish on your wood pieces.
