Glazing kitchen cabinets gives your cabinets an antique look and you will never believe how easy it is. I am Meghan carter and this is Ask the decorator. Making your painted or stained cabinet’s look old as easy with the technique known as glazing, glazing kitchen cabinets takes very little time. All you need is a can of glaze which you should be able to find at any paint store. A can of paint, two old rags or sponges, a mixing bowl and a mixing stick. Before you start glazing, you should remove your cabinet doors and hardware. If your cabinet has just been painted or stained, you do not need to clean it, otherwise clean and dry your cabinet. Allow any wood paint or stain on your cabinets to completely dry before applying the glaze. To show you how to glaze kitchen cabinet I will be working on this purple cabinet that has a stencil pattern on it. Now, I want it to look more old and antique, so I will be using this gray paint that matches the color that is on the counter top. Now you can use gray brown or black paint when you are glazing your kitchen cabinets. To make the paint more translucent, I will be mixing glaze with the paint. Adding the glaze mix the paint go on thinner and not dry as fast. Do not be shock when you open the glaze can it will be a milky white color but do not worry it will dry clear. The amount of paint and glaze you put together depends on how dark you want your cabinets to be. If you want a very light antique look, use one part paint to three parts glaze. If you want a medium antique look, use one part paint to one part glaze. If you want a very dark antiques look use three part paint to one part glaze. I will be using half glaze and half paint, so that you can really see what a glaze looks like. Once you have your mixture made dip your rag in it and start rubbing your rag into the cabinet. You can use strike strokes or circular strokes, so whatever you think looks the best. Make sure you really get the mixture in all of the cracks that will help to create the antique look. After applying the glaze mixture take a clean cloth and wipe the excess glaze off. When putting on glaze it is best to work in sections because the glaze will kind of dry really fast. So put a little bit on and do not be afraid to really rub it in and then wipe it off. If you find that wipe too much off just go ahead and layer more on top, it would not hurt it and that will give you a deeper ritual look. When you are finish glazing the cabinet let the cabinet dry completely. Let it tack the hardware and hang the cover towards back up. It is that simple, just look at how different the glaze cabinet door looks compared to the unglazed door. It is dramatic.
