John Palmer is a metallurgical engineer and an internationally acclaimed brewing author. He takes an engineering approach to brewing, breaking down the processes into logical steps in a non-technical style that takes the mystery out of brewing.

John has been brewing since 1991, and has written several articles for Brewing Techniques, Zymurgy, and Brew Your Own. In early '90s, John posted "How to Brew Your First Beer"--a short but comprehensive document for first-time brewers that quickly became the most popular how-to document for brewing in the world. Over the years, it has been requested from every continent--including Antarctica--and translated into Spanish, Italian, Korean, and Japanese. In 1995, he was featured on the Home & Garden Channel's "What's Your Hobby" show in a segment on home brewing.

In 2000, John published a comprehensive book, "How To Brew", on the Internet at www.howtobrew.com. It has become the first source for home brewing information around the world. A hardcopy edition followed in 2001, and a fully revised third edition was published by Brewers Publications in June, 2006. "How To Brew" contains the latest information on home brewing techniques with malt extract and all-grain brewing, including yeast management, fermentation, and recipe design.

John is a certified beer judge in the North American BJCP program and is a frequent guest speaker at home brewing conferences and competitions.
