I was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, and
recently moved back with my husband and four young sons. I enjoy
home schooling the boys, ages 10, 5, 3, and 1, and I especially enjoy
shopping for curriculum and supplies. We currently home school in
the eclectic style, using Sonlight Curriculum as our base. I've
been fairly active in Sonlight's popular home school forums for about
five years now.
My husband and I enjoy cooking from scratch, and learning about food, and we get a lot of our recipes from Food Network shows, especially Good Eats. The boys also enjoy being in the kitchen and learning to cook. We are careful to avoid food with petroleum-based ingredients, such as artificial flavors and colors, so we rarely use any processed foods at all.
One of my favorite breakfasts is toast with real butter and homemade preserves! We've canned dozens of jars of fig preserves from the huge fig tree in our backyard, but our favorites are blueberries and blackberries, which we can get locally. Next year, we plan to grow our own berries to can along with the figs, pears and tons of vegetables. A family with four growing boys can go through an awful lot of home grown groceries!
I grew up with lots of pets. My first dog, a cocker spaniel named Fluffy, taught me what real puppy love was, and according to my baby book my very first words were "Hey, Jules!" spoken to our cat! Ever since, I have loved being around animals. I've shared living space with dozens of cats and kittens, a family of beautiful Siamese rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs, various snakes and iguanas (some bought and some caught), a pair of peacocks and a few very special dogs. I've bottlefed orphaned squirrels and bunnies, and I've given shots to a ball python with bronchitis!
At the moment our family includes two orphaned kittens who were rescued from a highway where their mother and siblings had been hit by cars, plus an ornery nine-year-old tomcat and the sweetest beagle in the world. Daisy, the beagle and our newest addition, was enjoying a cool drink of water in our backyard when we spotted her back in April. She was starving, filthy and in heat. She immediately got dinner and a bath, and is now spayed and exceedingly healthy, and will forever be a part of the Johnson family.
