Everyone wants some companionship in life. For some, companionship comes from pet animals. For a portion of these people, it comes from a pet reptile. Adopting a pet reptile can be a great way to satisfy your needs for a friend.

When you first consider adopting a pet reptile, you have to make sure of some things first. The questions you need to ask yourself are ones such as: "Can I afford to feed and care for this animal?" and "Do I have the time to give this creature the attention it needs?" If you believe you can meet the requirements of adopting and raising a pet reptile, then you are ready to move on to step two.

The next thing you need to do in the plan to adopt a reptile is to find a suitable place where reptiles are available. You can find reptiles at most local pet shops. Usually you will have to buy the animal, but sometimes the shops are willing to give it to you for free. The true form of adopting.

Once you have a place where you can adopt your new companion, you have to decide what kind of reptile you want. No one likes to be bitten by their pet, but if you especially cannot handle a snake or lizard bite, it might be best if you consider a turtle or other slow-moving and peaceful animal. If you like living on the dangerous side, you can get a permit to raise alligators. This is difficult, but I'm sure if you have your mind set on it, you'll find a way to pull it off. Also keep the reptile's age in question as well. If you want a friend who will be there with you throughout most of the years of your life, I recommend the turtles, as they are long-lived.

Once you get your pet, you will have to purchase the items needed to care for it. Heating rocks or lamps are required for most reptiles. You'll also want to get a suitable cage or terrarium. Keep your reptile's diet in mind. Most can be fed with food from a can or bottle made especially for them. Others, like snakes, will require you to feed them live prey, such as mice. This is unsettling for some people, so that's another thing to keep in mind when you buy your pet.

Have fun with your reptile. Good luck!
