People purchase pets for all kinds of reasons, but the most common maybe a desire for companionship. Nothing may be as soothing as curling up with a good book with a snuggly, warm cat who loves being with you as much as you love being with him or her. Consider the Manx cat.

While the Cornish Rex is the poster cat for the hairless, furless feline (The Yul Bryner of the cat world), the Manx is known as the tailless cat. The truth is though that the Manx may have any variation of a tail from none to some to all. If you are interested in this unique breed, do some leg work and find your cat yourself.

First, consider why you want a cat in the first place. The Manx is sweet and calm, but is also a fierce hunter. You will likely find evidence of its prowess if you allow the cat outside or you live in the country. Some find the presence of dead mice, moles, and baby rabbits distasteful. Always generous, your Manx will deliver the meat fresh to your door.

After examining your true feelings about cat ownership, the next question is a breeder or a shelter cat. Believe it or not, there are pet owners who buy a pet and then neglect the cat's needs and health. Once the cat comes into your home, you have made a commitment even if the cat reaches the old age of 20 years. Call local shelters to find out if a kitten is available for adoption. Be sure to ask for shot, worming, and spay or neuter records. There are also Manx cat rescues who will place young or older kittens.

Be aware that the genetic defect which marks these cats' tails may also cause spinal defects. Usually by the time a kitten is ready to be adopted (3-4 months) these defects are visible.

If you have decided to contact a breeder, ASK AROUND. In calling a breeder, ask for names of people who have purchased a cat from this breeder and, if possible, call or visit the owners before buying. Another way to find kittens would be to visit your local cat show and ask breeders if they could recommend a good breeder. Don't be afraid of being too pushy. Owning any kind of cat requires time, patience, and effort. A Manx kitten, however, brings many unique characteristics to the human-pet relationship.
