Care for Beta Fish

Beta fish are one of the easiest freshwater fish to care for. Care for beta fish is very similar to care for any other freshwater fish. The basic things you will need to care for beta fish, are a tank, tank decorations, beta food, water conditioner, and of course your beta. Care for beta fish is the main factor in how long the fish will live. If cared for properly, beta fish can live for many years.

The most important part of care for beta fish is purchasing the correct size tank. The smallest size you should have to care for beta fish, per fish, is half a gallon. Keeping betas in small bowls or in the vase with bamboo plants have, unfortunately, become popular. It is true that in their native Thailand, betas can survive in puddles during the dry season. However, care for beta fish should be more than just wanting to fish to "survive" in their tank. A half-gallon tank is a good size to care for beta fish so they live a long life.

Now that you have a tank to care for beta fish, it's time to decorate. Most kits come with gravel and a plastic plant. Those are the basic components needed to care for beta fish. Betas like to hide in objects with a tunnel or hole. The pectoral and dorsal fins on beta fish are very delicate. Be sure to care for beta fish fins by purchasing soft fabric-like artificial plants for your tank.

The next item needed to care for beta fish is food. Betas are carnivorous, so care for beta fish should include special pellets made especially to care for beta fish. To properly care for beta fish only six pellets should be fed twice a week, then gradually moving up to ten pellets after six months. Care for beta fish is easier than other fish because they have no metabolism. They do not need to be fed every day.

Cleaning the tank is the part of care for beta fish that requires the most effort. Beta tanks need to be cleaned once a week. Adequate care for beta fish tanks means rinsing the contents of the tank before refilling with water. Care for beta fish also includes adding a water conditioner. The label should read that the conditioner is made to care for beta fish.

The minimal time and effort required to care for beta fish lets you enjoy your fish without much fuss.
