There are many joys to be found when bringing a new cat into your life, and one fun yet difficult thing to do is to come up with cat names for your new pet.  To many people, this animal is a source of joy and comfort.  Some people even consider them to be like a child.  Today, when pet care costs sometimes rival the cost of having a child, it becomes apparent just how important these animals have become in our lives.  Having said this, if you place such importance on this creature, is not naming them one of the first important decisions you will make in this new relationship?

Coming up with a name for your cat is an important process, especially when you consider how many times you will be saying that name once you have chosen it.  While you are staring at this tiny new being, take into consideration that they will grow up.  For instance, if you have a male orange tabby, who is cute and prim when he is a tiny kitten in the middle of your large living room floor.  You might choose to name him Tinker Bell or Prissy Foot.  One year and 12 pounds later, this miniature lion has torn your curtains to shreds, ripped a hole in your screen door and is sitting on your kitchen counter sunning himself.  "Now, Tinker Bell, why did you do that to Mommy's curtain?"  might seem slightly ridiculous.

There are many routes possible when coming up with cat names.  There are classic names for cats, such as Fluffy or Puss or human names like Molly or Jack.  Do you have a favorite character in a book or movie?  Sometimes that is a wonderful way to come up with cat names.  Think about a book you have read, and a character you admire.  If that seems a fitting name for your new pet, then go for it.  Maybe the new kitty has climbed up on the sofa and perched herself in a way that brings Aunt Harriet to mind.  Well, Harriet just might be a fabulous name for your cat!

If you find that you are still having trouble coming up with names for your cat, go to the public library.  Most libraries have a collection of baby name books that offer hosts of suggestions, from classic names to names popular in different countries both in present times and past.  There are sure to be wonderful examples in them.  Some libraries even have books dedicated to pet names.  If you have access to the Internet, the search can be greatly broadened.  Whatever route you chose in coming up with cat names, you will inevitably stumble on the right choice.  Once you find it, it will seem as right as your new family addition.  Enjoy this new and budding relationship!
