There are a lot of wild mammals now part of the endangered species list. Endangered animals are those species considered to be in danger of going extinct. Based on the last survey conducted by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), there are over 5500 wild mammals considered to be endangered or threatened to be in extinction.
Here are some of the wild mammals/animals that are considered to be endangered:
- Black-footed ferret - This is a small carnivorous North American prairie animal, and is also known as the Giant Mouse in Russia. This mammal was classified as endangered in the U.S. in 1967.
- Iberian lynx - This critically endangered species of cat is found in southern Europe, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula. The Iberian lynx, also called the Spanish lynx, is a medium-sized cat and is the most threatened carnivore in the world.
- Squaretail coral grouper - This is a medium-sized grouper, which can be found on the coral reefs of the Indo-pacific. This fish has been identified as vulnerable or endangered because of its importance in the luxury live reef food fish trade.
- Bengal tigers - This are a subspecies of the tiger and are primarily found in India and Bangladesh. The Bengal tigers' population is estimated at 1,300 to 1,500 and they are in grave danger of becoming extinct. A factor that is causing the loss of this animal is habitat losses and large-scale incidences of poaching - poachers kill tigers not only for the pelts but also for body parts, which are used for various Eastern medicines.
- Blue whales - For many years, whales have played an important part in people's lives. They not only provide meat but also provide fat, oil, leather and other useful materials that people use. To date, out of the 11 species of great whales seven are now considered endangered and the blue whales is part of this list. Based on the latest study by the IUCN, the blue whales in the Antarctic are considered the most endangered of all the groups of whales. Local environmental groups have developed a research and monitoring program for these whales.
Everything on earth, humans, animals and our environment, is God's gift. We need to remember that we are God's stewards. As His stewards we need to take good care not only of each other but also of all creatures that He has placed on earth. We should always remember that every human activity, if callously done, will have a severe effect on every creature and on the environment. That is why the list for endangered animals keeps growing year after year. If no corrective action is done, others might never have the chance to see the other beautiful living creature like the blue whales or the Bengal tiger.
