They do okay with children, but they are so big that they will easily be able to knock them down; however, they are considered a calm, gentle family dog. Proper grooming is an important aspect of any dog's proper care, including the Rhodesian Ridgeback. They need to be bathed only when necessary but brushed regularly with a soft bristle brush. Send them to the groomer for nail clippings, ear cleanings, and other more difficult tasks. Also remember that since the dog is short-haired it will need extra shelter during the winter to prevent any health problems.

Always remember that caring for Rhodesian Ridgeback and any other dog will also mean it needs nutritionally complete food and fresh water daily.
