The Vizsla breed is most commonly known for being a Hungarian hunting dog. Vizslas are known for their muscular stature and golden rust colors. The Vizslas were close to extinction shortly after World War II; luckily a few were saved from extinction making the Vizslas a very popular breed with hunters.
Male Vizslas grow to be generally of a maximum height of twenty-six inches, with a healthy weight that can be as much as sixty pounds. Females do tend to be a bit smaller with a general height of twenty-four inches and a maximum healthy weight of fifty-five pounds. Due to the size of this breed and their energetic behavior, it is not recommended that Vizslas live in an apartment without the accessibility to an average size yard.
Vizslas require their owners to be the boss. If the Vizsla owner does not show authority, the Vizsla will become uncontrollable. Vizslas are very energetic and love to play. They do require firm yet gentle training, as they do become easily distracted when a chance to play has come about. Vizslas have the ability to adjust too many of life circumstances. They generally get along with other breeds of dog and young children; Vizslas are too energetic for toddler children. Vizslas make an excellent companion when doing outdoor exercising.
The Vizsla should be bathed as necessary, with a mild dog shampoo. Vizslas do shed mildly and should be brushed with a bristle brush or comb at least once every week. Vizsla’s nails should be kept trimmed to avoid any chances of injury or infection.
Vizslas thrive on a well balanced diet. It is recommended that Vizslas are fed a dog food that is high in protein and vegetables.
Potty training your Vizsla will be time consuming. Vizslas can take months to potty train, with consistency your hard work will pay off. Without consistency and determination the Vizsla will easily become distracted.
Veterinary care is a necessity to ensure your new found Vizsla is up to date on their vaccinations, and is healthy. In later years of a Vizslas life they are prone to hip dysplasia. Vizslas do have a life expectancy of twelve to fifteen years when provided with proper care.
