Say Hello Long Happy Years...Goobye Bad Health

Your dog is a member of the family. The last thing you want is a sick or unhappy pooch. Just like you look out for your own health (for preventative and maintenance reasons), you should also look out for the health of your pet. In all actuality, humans can live by these steps, too!

Step 1:

Water. Oh, the importance of water! Your pet needs water to survive just as much as you do. Water is essential for his body to function.

If you keep your pet outside during the hot summer months, then water is even more important. Water plays a critical role in regulating body temperature and can help prevent heat strokes.

So, how can water improve your pet’s health? First, it can help remove toxins in your pet’s body through urination. Water can also have a big impact on your pet’s skin and coat. A healthy coat means healthy skin; which, in turn, means a healthy pooch.
Water will help keep your dog’s skin from drying out and becoming itchy.

Your pet should always have access to plenty of water. If it’s super hot outside, then throw some ice cubes in his bowl to help keep the water cool. You should also clean out your dog's water bowl often to prevent bacterial growth.

Step 2:

Food. Just as with water, your pet can't live without food. But the quality of the food can have a big impact on your pet's life as well. If your dog has special dietary requirements, then talk to your veterinarian first. You vet can recommend what types and brands of food your pet needs, depending on his age and activity level. Your pet's health will improve if she is being fed a well-balanced diet.

Step 3:

Exercise. The obesity rate is soaring in household pets. Extra pounds on your pooch can make him less active and fatigued. Dogs need to exercise every day!

The amount of exercise depends upon the breed of your dog. Sometimes, a daily walk will suffice. Many breeds require laborious exercise, such as long jogs or runs.

Even if your pet spends most of her time outdoors, you still need to exercise with her.
Throw a Frisbee or play catch, along with walking a few laps around the neighborhood. Exercise will not only keep her healthy, but it will also make her happy. She will enjoy spending time with you and look forward to an established routine.

Step 4:

Obedience training. Many people housetrain their pets, but stop there. A well-trained pet is a happier pet. Your dog looks to please you; if you are constantly upset with your pooch because of his behavior, then you may be less likely to spend time with him or reward him for the good things he does.

Training establishes a strong bond between you and your pet. You are more likely to take him places and give him additional freedom if you know that you can trust and control him. Because of the exercise involved, agility training can keep your pet happy and strengthen his health. You and your pet will be happier if he is properly trained.

Step 5:

Living conditions. Living conditions can have a huge effect on your pet's health and happiness. If you keep your pooch outdoors, then he should have an adequate amount of space to roam and play. His dog house should be large enough for him to lie down and turn around (at the least). He should have plenty of shade for the warm months and warm bedding for the colder ones.

If kept indoors, then he should also have a suitable place to sleep and room to play. Toys are always great items for your pet to have!

Step 6:

Attention. Giving your pet lots of attention is extremely important. Your dog thrives on attention from you. She looks to you for love and care and is gracious when you fulfill her needs. Attention can come in many forms: training, exercise, playing, etc.

Spending time with your pooch can also help deter destructive behaviors. If she has your interest, then she is less likely to partake in an activity (such as destructive chewing) in an effort to get you to notice her.

These are six simple things that can keep up the health of your dog. Don't ignore the basic essentials, such as food and water. The more time you spend with your dog, whether you are training or playing, the better behaved and happier he will be!
