When the straw decomposes in the pond water, it gives off chemical substances called lignins. With the help of the sun's heat, the lignins are converted into hydrogen peroxide. The straws constantly release a sufficient amount of hydrogen peroxide that can be tolerated by the fishes and other pond creatures since the substance can be very dangerous when added in high doses. The barley straws however do not affect or kill the existing algae, it only prevents its growth and reproduction. An important factor in the decomposition of your barley straw is your water's temperature. As your water temperature increases, the rate of decomposition also accelerates. It is usually recommended to add the barley straws during the early days of spring where the temperature is low. It will take about a month for your straw to decompose in your barley ponds. In large bodies of water, the straw are usually bundled in potato or onion sacks. You will notice that as the straw rots itself, it will slowly sink into the pond until it is no longer visible at the surface. A planter attaches a plastic bottle or a cork in their bundle to ensure that the straws get enough oxygen for decomposition.
