Sweaky Clean for a Long, Healthy Life

Average rating:
There’s a reason why we often see bird baths decorating gardens and yards throughout our neighborhoods. Birds know the health benefit to regular grooming and maintenance. If you are a parrot owner, it’s your responsibility to maintain the health of your parrot through regular grooming.
Step 1:

Leave some things to the Vets. Although some pet owners choose to clip their parrot’s wings at home, until you’re sure you’ve mastered this skill it’s probably something you should leave to the veterinarian. The vet knows just how to trim the flight feathers so that the parrot is unable to fly away but is still able to make short flights.

Step 2:

Enlist the help of a friend for your parrot’s grooming procedure. The friend should hold your parrot with 2 hands, just under his neck, allowing his feet to touch the ground.

Step 3:

Using an appropriate filing tool, trim your parrot’s long nails. Like with dogs, the nail is prone to bleeding if trimmed too short.  If this is the case, you’ll want to have styptic powder on hand to stop the bleeding.

Step 4:

Using a small sanding tool, trim your parrot’s beak. Consult a book in order to determine appropriate shaping and length of your parrot’s beak. Carefully shape and reduce the length of the beak with the tool. As with the parrot’s nails, the beak may bleed and will need to be treated with styptic powder.

Step 5:

You should have a misting bottle that you need to use to mist your parrot daily. They like this small “shower” and it gets them adapted to water so that when it’s time to bathe your parrot, he is less likely to react negatively to the water.

Step 6:

Your parrot should be bathed once a week. If you bathe him in a sink, do not fill the lukewarm water more than an inch or two and be sure to place a rubber mat in the
sink so he doesn’t slip.  Start by massaging water into his feathers to calm and soothe him. When he is sufficiently wet, massage parrot shampoo into his body, being careful to avoid his eyes and ears. Some parrot owners even take their parrots into the shower with them, letting the spray and humidity wash over them.

This grooming routine will help remove excess dirt from your parrot’s feathers and keep his nails and beak at a comfortable length.
