Volunteer at a shelter. A great way to help animals is to volunteer at an animal shelter. Animal shelters offer care to abused or abandoned animals, and often rely on the generosity of sponsors and volunteers to make ends meet. You can donate your time to help feed, bathe and walk the animals. Or you can make a monetary donation to help the shelter provide for the hundreds of animals that walk through its door every year.
Support spaying and neutering. You can also help animals by keeping the pet population down. There are lots of animals (cats, dogs and otherwise) that need a loving home, so don't add to the problem by producing more baby animals. Pay the reasonable fee and have your pat spayed or neutered. You'll sleep easier knowing that you aren't contributing to the number of strays in your community.
Treat your pets with compassion. Another way to help animals is to ensure that they are treated fairly. Don't chain your dog! They're meant to run free. Cages shouldn't be a home for dogs and cats, but rather a temporary shelter for a short period of time. And speak to your animals with compassion in your voice. Even though they might not understand you, animals understand your tone of voice. Help animals by conveying a loving and supportive tone at all times.
Don't buy pets from pet stores. It seems ridiculous that people will buy a pet from a pet store when there are hundreds of animals that need adoption at the local animal shelters. Don't support pet stores or the puppy mills that supply dogs to them by getting your pets from shelters and urging your family to do the same.
Keep their environment clean. You can also help animals by ensuring that their environment is clean. Contribute to the good health of your pets by keep litter boxes clean and backyards ‘scooped'. Regularly clean out fish tanks or rodent cages. And always clean out your pet's food dishes to avoid disease and infection. Treat your animals well by giving them a safe, happy and clean home.
Be a rescue home. Even if you don't have your own pets, there are still ways that you can help animals. One very rewarding way to help animals is to become a rescue home. Volunteer your house as a place where animals can come for care and love when shelters are overflowing and euthanasia is the only other options. Provide a nurturing home for abused animals and you'll always get back more than you give.
