Cats can be much easier to look after than dogs, but you still need to care for them properly for them to remain content. Like all pets, they have basic needs that must be met before they can be happy. Here's how to keep a cat contented, comfortable, and happy:

  1. Basic needs. Your cat needs high-quality food and plenty of clean water. Feed your cat the most nutritious cat food available. Food and water are essential if you cat to be healthy. Provide a litter box that is scooped daily, and don't forget to add fresh litter, as needed. Cats will quickly become discontent with a dirty litter box, and will let you know by refusing to use it.
  2. Attention and companionship. Cats become lonely quickly when they are ignored. Make sure to spend individual time with your cat every day. Cats that tend to be "lap cats" enjoy even more attention. Keep a cat contented through constant interactions with people, but if your cat is a bit shy and likes to hide when visitors come to your home, don't drag them out from under the bed.
  3. Entertainment. To be content, your cat must be entertained. Keep him from getting bored when you're not there by providing plenty of fun cat toys. Cat furniture such as a cat tree can provide entertainment, especially if it is placed near a window so your cat can watch the birds and squirrels. A cat scratching post is another great choice for keeping your cat contented; cats love to sharpen your claws, but a scratching post will keep them from doing it on your furniture.
  4. Health care. Your cat will become unhappy if they are in pain. Watch your cat for any signs of illness or injury, and visit the vet promptly. Though a vet visit may upset your cat, and it can be hard to get cats to get in their carriers, it's a much better choice than letting your pet suffer through the pain. Don't forget flea medications, if needed, and routine vaccinations. If your cat is a breed that requires grooming, including combing or baths, be sure to do this as needed. Matted hair is quite uncomfortable for your cat. Plus, grooming can reduce hairballs, which are not fun for the cat or for you.
  5. Safety. Your cat needs to be protected from the things that might harm them. Be sure to kitten-proof your house, which is similar to baby-proofing. Keeping your cat indoors can protect them from wild or stray animals and many diseases. Within your home, have a "safe place" for your cat in a quiet room with a soft cat bed. Your cat can retreat into this room when they are feeling overwhelmed, such as during parties or thunderstorms.

It is your responsibility as a caring cat owner to keep your cat contented. Without your attention, your cat may become both unhappy and unhealthy. However, with just a little careful thought, you can give your cat a long, healthy, and content life.
