Cats are one of the most common and highly populated house pets throughout the world due to their domestic nature, cute look, and interactive nature with people. Cats can be one of the tamest most lovable pets in your household. But one thing everyone should always avoid in keeping cats is feline obesity. Obesity is very common in cats which are kept indoors due to the risk of outdoor predators, accidents, and simple health issues such as parasites and disease. Here's how to keep your cat fit and trim?
- When taking care of a cat, the first thing you need to know about preventing your cat from becoming overweight is not to overfeed them. Cats, especially the cats that are being fed products such as wet food, are at an even greater risk of obesity then cats that eat standard dry food. Diet is important in a feline's life.
- When feeding your cat you should try to stay away from products such as wet food which contain high volumes of fat content, especially if your cat is already having health problems due to being overweight. A good alternative to feeding wet food is to simply supplement dry food with a bit of warm water, or feline friendly broth such as chicken broth which is boiled out straight from a chicken and not full of fake flavor supplements which may be harmful to your cats health.
- Avoid cat and kitten treats, there are plenty of products out there which are designed to be very healthy, but are not. Always check the calorie information in anything consumable for cats along with the list of substances which have been used to make these products. You may be surprised as to what you find.
- Exercise is also vital in a feline's life, and it may be harder to get your cat active when they become older. One good way is to bite the bullet and let your cat live indoors and go outdoors once in a while to explore if conditions are safe enough, this way the curiosity may spark a lazy cat to do something. You can also entice activity out of a feline with toys, lots of toys. Some toys which create active cats are jungle gyms, bouncing toys, hanging toys, play mice, and rattle balls. Anything which would require your cat to run, jump, or climb.
- Last but not least, prevent stress and keep your cats healthy, stress can make a cat unwilling to be active and just hide most of the day. Stress can also cause a cat's immune system to lower drastically. If you have an overweight cat make sure to pay regular visits to the vet to make sure your cat's weight problems are not due to something more than poor diet or lack of exercise. And also to make sure your cat's weight is not causing any new health risks and problems to arise.
