Dog parks can be a great place for your pet to get some exercise and socialize with other animals. There is some inherent risk, however. While your dog might be well behaved, not everyone's will be. However, with a few minor precautions you can keep your dog safe and ensure that everyone has a good time.
The first step is to make sure that your dog is ready for a dog park. If he is aggressive or fearful around other animals this may not be the best option. Make sure your dog is well socialized, and know how he reacts to strangers and new situations before stepping inside. A fearful dog can be just as likely to bite as an aggressive one under the right circumstances, and there will be a lot of new situations at the dog park.
You should also make sure your dog's vaccinations are up-to-date. There will be many other animals at the park, and while their owners shouldn't bring them if they're sick, not everyone follows the rules. Talk to your vet to find out if there are any prevalent diseases in your area that aren't necessarily covered by the standard shots, as there might be vaccinations for these as well. The health and safety of your dog is of primary importance.
Take some time to observe before entering the dog park. Watch how the dogs interact with each other and if the owners are being attentive. If the play seems too rough or the owners aren't watching their dogs you may want to come back at another time or choose a different park. If your dog is particularly small you may want to look at the size of the other dogs as well. A large dog may accidentally injure a smaller one by playing too roughly.
Stay calm when entering the park, since your dog will take his cues from you. Be prepared for some of the dogs to rush over to greet the newcomer, since this can be overwhelming for some dogs. You may want to keep your dog on the leash until these introductions are over. That way it will be easier to leave quickly if necessary. If you dog seems to be getting along with the others you can let him loose.
Make sure you keep an eye on your dog while he interacts with the others. If he is being too aggressive or being bullied you may have to intervene or ask the owner of the other dog to help. Be very careful of grabbing your dog in tense situations, as he may turn and snap at you out of surprise.
With a few precautions, a dog park can be a wonderful and safe experience for your pet.
