Treat Your Family Pet to a Homemade, Healthy Treat for Pennies per Snack

Yes, store-bought dog treats are quick and easy, and Rover loves to swallow them whole, but have you ever read the label and tried to figure out exactly what you are spending so much money on and what is going through Rover's digestive system? By spending a few minutes per week preparing this homemade snack, you will save money and feel the satisfaction of knowing your family pet is enjoying all-natural ingredients.
Ingredients:
3/4 cup of water
2-3 chicken or beef bouillon cubes
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup powdered milk
1 egg, beaten
3 cups whole wheat flour
Preparation:
- Boil water, take off stove, and dissolve the bouillon cubes in the hot water.
- In a large bowl, pour hot mixture over butter and stir until the butter is melted.
- Add dry milk and beaten egg and stir.
- Add flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until it is all blended and forms a stiff dough ball.
- On a floured cloth, knead the dough for 3-4 minutes.
Form treats and bake:
- Break off about a "golf ball" size piece of dough and roll between your hands until it is about a 2-inch roll.
- Place rolls on a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 325 for 50-60 minutes.
- Cool completely before placing in a storage container.
Tips and reminders:
- Store in refrigerator (since these are made with all-natural ingredients).
- Label the container with either the date they were made or the end date for use. These snacks are best enjoyed within one week.
- For additional cost and time savings, purchase ingredients in bulk, spend a day making numerous batches, then freeze in containers that hold a week's worth of treats.
- While forming the dough into bite-size treats, have fun making different shapes (logs, balls, rings, etc.). Rover won't know the difference but you will have fun!
Once you have mastered this wonderful treat and trained Rover to salivate the moment you pull out the ingredients and flick on the oven, consider giving a batch as gifts to all your dog-loving friends and family. Make a batch, cool completely, then store in plastic bags or containers and decorate with Fido's name or Spot's picture. You will be forever thanked with slurps and licks when you come bearing gifts of these homemade, all-natural treats.
