Fleas can be quite a menace to your pets. They bite and can be quite itchy for your pets. They could also be the vectors of some infections that might turn out serious if not addressed immediately. Also, having an infestation at home is never fun since fleas could very well go to humans. Nobody would be thrilled to have fleas in their sofa, couch or bed for sure. This is why there is need to make sure that fleas don’t make it on to your pets. Not just for the love of your four-legged friends but also for the sake of your own family and furniture.
One effective way of making sure that your pets don’t have to go through being tormented by fleas or ticks is by giving your pet a flea collar. A flea collar is a special collar that is designed to keep ticks away. You may easily buy these easily at the pet supply store but if you have the time to make it yourself, you would surely save a lot more money. Also, isn’t it more special when you’re giving your pet something that you yourself made? It’s an absolutely great project.
Here’s how you can make a fairly simple flea collar:
- Buy a collar or get the collar that your pet is already using. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just needs to be absorbent. Any leather collar would do.
- Mix various oils and other liquids that would make the collar unappealing to fleas. There are naturally occurring oils such as citronella, thyme, cedar wood and lavender that have been known to take care of pests and soothe the spirit of those who can smell it. Those smells that are noxious to fleas aren’t exactly the same ones that are undesirable for humans. Combine a drop of each of these essential oils with about half a cup of alcohol and some garlic granules. These ingredients can be easily bought from a craft store an herbal essences shop. Seal the mixture inside a jar.
- Drop the collar inside and let it sit there for about six hours. The idea is to have the oils and other liquids infused into the very fabric of the collar. This would have a very distinct lingering aroma that would be very irritating for the fleas. Don’t worry about the smell since the nice aromas of cedar wood, lavender and citronella would absolutely mask the garlic smells and even promote calmness in the general vicinity.
- Clean the entire house just to be sure. The fleas can be anywhere to spraying the house with anti flea pesticides would be a good idea. Disinfect the surfaces that the dog sleeps on for good measure.
By doing your own flea collar, you do not only save money, you also do something that is special for your pet. This should only increase your closeness to your beloved four legged friend.
