Rabbits make a perfect household pet. Raising a rabbit inside a small space or a cage is a challenge. In raising your rabbits as pets, here are key points that should be put into consideration:

  1. In choosing a rabbit cage, try to look for a good quality cage with a dimension of 23” x 24” x 16” for rabbits weighing less than six pounds. For bigger sized rabbits weighing more than six pounds, the dimensions of the cage should be at least 24” x 36” x 16”. The cage should have a wired bottom base and an easy disposal hatch for easy waste disposal. Check for the quality of the materials used. Choose the cage that has a design that matches the interior design of the house. The ratio of rabbits and cages should be (1 rabbit = 1 cage / maximum of 2 rabbits in 1 cage).
  2. Place the cage in a suitable location so that the rabbit cage would look as if it is also a part of the house decoration. Consider the temperature of the atmosphere inside the room where the cage is located. This could greatly affect the rabbit’s behavior and lifestyle.
  3. Be sure that all of the necessary accessories are properly placed inside the rabbit cage (feeder caps, warmers, water bottles, hay racks, heater pads, etc.). Put the accessories firmly in place so that the accessories would not move when the rabbits are feeding. Use urine guard accessory to prevent urine from making contact with the floor and leave stains.
  4. After preparing all the things required in raising a rabbit, you can now choose a breed of you choice either by surfing on the Internet and buy a rabbit online or you can go to your nearest pet store and pick the kind of rabbit that you like. You could ask the clerk for some information regarding tips on how to properly raise your pet and how to keep it healthy. You could also ask for vaccines so that your pet would be immune to common viral infection.
  5. In taking you newly bought pet home, handle it gently. And if ever you are going to put it in a container, make sure that the box or the package has proper ventilation to prevent the rabbit from being stressed. Let your pet roam freely inside the house after taking the rabbit out of the container to make your pet comfortable with the new place. Then, you may now put your pet into its new home.
  6. Maintaining cleanliness of the cage keeps the place free from unwanted odors. Cage maintenance also reduces the risk of developing harmful bacteria that might affect the rabbit’s health. Always check the waste disposal hatch daily and clean the uneaten food to avoid food poisoning.
  7. In washing the rabbit, carefully take the rabbit out of its cage and use a clean container filled with water (enough to submerge half the part of a rabbits body) and use non-irritating soap wash to keep the rabbit’s body clean and smelling nice.
  8. Take your pet outdoors once in a while, (if you have a fenced garden or backyard) in able for your pet to breathe in fresh air. If not, then at least take your pet out of its cage for a couple of hours.

Keeping these things in mind, and applying them, you will be on your way to having a happy rabbit despite the small space available.
