Before selecting a Bernese Mountain Dog, take the time to understand what type of pet you are bringing into your life. With their dense coats and large size, Bernese Mountain Dogs can be a daunting undertaking.  By thoroughly understanding your family's needs and what you will need to do to care properly for your new pet, you can make an informed decision about whether this is the dog for you.  If properly trained by a family who loves him, a Bernese Mountain Dog can be a wonderful addition to your family.

With any giant breed dog there are potential health issues that need to be considered when selecting your pet.  While Bernese Mountain Dogs are generally a sturdy breed, you should make sure there are not any known hip or joint issues in your potential puppy's bloodline. You should take care to select a reputable breeder or rescue association that is aware of the dog's history and temperament. Since Bernese Mountain Dogs are quite strong, you will want to be aware of any possible temperament issues - sometimes what seems cute at first can become a real problem as your puppy reaches a hundred pounds or more.  

Bernese Mountain Dogs are also very sensitive to their environments. Also, find out whether your breeder is willing to stay available to you for the questions that come up for all new pet owners. Don't be afraid to call and ask whether a new behavior is normal or what to expect during the night. Most responsible breeders are willing to help educate you; they like to know that their puppies are going to responsible pet owners.
