So you've decided to bring a new family member home. And you've mulled over your options and you've settled on a Bull Mastiff. Congratulations. Bull mastiffs are excellent family dogs, but there are a few things to keep in mind when you are searching for your new pet.

Consider the breeder. You will want to find out if they are members of any kennel clubs and if the puppies are going to be registered. You will want to check your resources and question the breeder if the puppies have been thoroughly checked out by a vet to ensure their health.

You may also want to consider getting a Bull Mastiff from a rescue agency or an animal shelter. But keep in mind that previous owners usually get rid of their Bull Mastiffs because they did not realize how big the dog would become and are not able to actually care for the dog properly. Usually the animals at rescue centers or animal shelters will be adult dogs.

Next you will want to consider what you are looking for in the breed when you go to pick out your new friend. A male Bull Mastiff will stand about 25-27 inches and weigh anywhere from 110-133 pounds. Bitches will stand about 24-26 inches and weigh in at 100-120 pounds. There are certain characteristics that you will want to watch for when you are taking your pick of the litter. The ears will be v-shaped, the eyes will be dark and alert, they will have some wrinkles on their forehead and they will be quite muscular but not over built. They will range in colors from fawn to brindle, and they will have little or no white coloring on them.

This breed needs a very firm leader and constant human companionship. Do not get this dog if they are going to be left alone for long periods of time. They are a very alert and exceptional guard dogs. This breed is very powerful and can be quite stubborn at times so asserting "pack-leadership" is key to a Bull Mastiff owner. It is essential for the dog to be socialized to ensure your new pet does not become aggressive with other dogs or humans.
