The American Wirehair cat is a relatively new breed. It originated in upstate New York in 1966, when the first wirehair cat appeared in a litter born to barn cats. The offspring of these original cats formed the American Wirehair breed, a uniquely American breed that can now be found around the nation (although they are still relatively uncommon). They are known for their uniquely textured fur. Here's how to select an American Wirehair:

  1. Fur texture. The most distinctive characteristic of the American Wirehair is the coarse, crimped hair. It has been described as similar to steel wool. Only about half of the litters of American Wirehair cat have this distinctive fur texture, and there is considerable variation among American Wirehair cats. If the entire coat appears in ringlets, it may be too long and will become wavy or straight rather than wiry as the cat matures. Ideally, it should be springy and medium in length, very dense and coarse. This texture will be most readily apparent in the whiskers, which may be crimped or curly. The American Wirehair can be found with almost any color coat.
  2. Eyes and other facial features. The eyes of the American Wirehair are large and round, with a slight upward tilt. They come in almost any color, depending on the color of the cat's coat. The eyes may appear to be unusually far apart. The ears are generally wide-set, with slightly rounded tips. The head is round, with prominent cheekbones.
  3. Body size. This breed is usually on the larger end when compared with other cats, with the males usually bigger than the females.
  4. Health. The breeder selling the American Wirehair should guarantee that your cat is in good health, and has tested negative for feline leukemia (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), two serious cat diseases. Pick up the cat, and look for good muscle tones. Avoid cats with signs of illness, like sniffling or dry or flaky skin. Check for fleas or flea dirt (black specks) behind the ears. Select a kitten no younger than 12 weeks old; kittens any younger than this are not ready to be placed in a new home yet, and may have health issues as adults if they are separated from their mothers before they are ready.
  5. Get a written sales agreement. Most American Wirehair cats are sold by established breeders, since it is still a new and fairly uncommon breed. Get a written sales agreement, including a health guarantee. Expect to pay $200 to $500 for your new kitten.
  6. Vet visit. Once you purchase your American Wirehair, your first stop should be the vet, especially if you have other animals at home. The vet will confirm that the kitten is in good health, and will treat any health issues before they become serious.

The American Wirehair is known for its ease of care and quiet and reserved, yet loving, manner. This breed is known for being active and disease resistant. These playful cats can be quite independent and love to explore, though they also enjoy attention from their owners.
