Supporting cat causes is especially important during the holidays. Giving to such causes is a great way to embrace the true spirit of the holidays, by reaching out to helpless animals. You can contribute to cat causes in many ways. Here’s how to support cat causes during the holidays:
- Make your favorite cat cause a gift recipient. Simply add them to your list of gift recipients this year. Most cat charities accept a wide range of new or used items, including food, blankets, and litter.
- Clean out your closets. Make room for the gifts you’ll receive this holiday season by bringing old blankets, sheets, and towels to a local cat charity, which will use them as bedding.
- Donate cash. The holidays are a popular time to give monetary donations to charity. Not only does this show your true holiday spirit, but it may also be a way to gain a tax write-off before the end of the year.
- Ask for donations in lieu of gifts. Send cards to those you normally send gifts to. In the card, let them know that you have donated to a charity this year in lieu of sending gifts. Also ask that others do the same instead of sending you gifts. Many cat charities also produce cards or photographs of the animals your donation will help.
- Choose gifts that support cat causes. Many pet charities offer gift items for sale, especially around the holidays. Choose these gifts, and the proceeds will support these causes. Many also have gifts available year-round.
- Volunteer at a shelter. If you are short on cash during the gift-giving season, give your time instead. Just one or two hours a week can be a big help. You can clean cages, play with the cats, or help with office tasks and paperwork. Nearly every cat cause is constantly looking for volunteers.
- Do not give pets as gifts. Many people think that furry cats make great gifts. Unless you are prepared to care for the cat for its entire lifetime, do not give a cat a gift. This commitment may not be one that the gift recipient is ready to make, and often these gifts end up in humane societies or shelters. Support cat causes by not giving pets as gifts, to reduce the number of unwanted animals currently awaiting adoption. Unfortunately, once the holiday season is over, thousands of cats and other pets are left at humane societies and animal shelters.
If you love cats, don’t forget about them during the holiday season. You can give possessions, monetary support, or your time, and encourage others to do the same.
