How To Treat Canine Constipation

Just like humans, canines can suffer from constipation, too. Canine constipation is not that dangerous as compared to other canine illnesses. However, as an owner, you should still know how to treat this condition properly.

There are actually several ways on how to treat constipation. The following will outline the most common treatments:

  • Treat constipation through a stool softener. One common way of treating constipation is by softening the stools. You can use stool softener that you can buy from pet supplies store. You can also use DSS capsules. You can get these from a veterinarian. Make sure that you read the instructions carefully. Do not give your dog the stool softener without reading the instructions first.
  • Use lubrication to treat constipation. Another treatment for constipation is the lubrication of the colon of your dog. You can use mineral oil for this. Most veterinarians advise dog owners to mix the oil in your dog’s food. Feeding raw mineral oil to your dog is not advisable. When you choose this treatment, be sure to follow the dosage given by the vet. This will avoid complications.
  • Ask your vet to perform an enema. To help clear your dog’s colon, the vet can perform enema. If the case is still moderate, IV fluids are enough to hydrate your dog. However, if the case is severe, the vet may anesthetize your dog. This is to allow your vet to perform an extensive cleansing. There are also some instances where the vet may have to perform a second cleansing. If you want this process to be more comfortable for your dog, you can perform it yourself. The first thing you need to do is to fill the bag of enema with soap and warm water. Then, get a mineral oil where you will dip the nozzle. Next, open the clamp. This will release the air inside the clamp. Close the clamp after this then place the nozzle three inches away from your dog’s rectum.
  • Alter your dog’s diet. One way of doing this is by adding fiber to your dog’s diet. You can buy a specialized high fiber diet dog food from your local pet store. This will help restore the colon motility of your pet. You may also add fiber to your dog’s diet through various foods that you can feed him. You can use bran cereal. 100% bran cereals are full of fibers. Canned pumpkin and Metamucil may also be an option.
  • Consider pelvis-widening surgery. Another way of treating constipation is through surgery. The vet will recommend this procedure if your dog suffered from pelvic fracture. Your dog may have to spend a few days in the hospital for this procedure. During this time, it is best that you give your dog supportive care. This will make the recovery of your dog faster.
  • Consider surgery to reach the dog’s rectum. Intestinal blockage can also cause constipation. This can be a fatal condition. If this is the case, the vet may recommend surgery to treat it. Remember that the location of the blockage will indicate how dangerous the operation would be.

These are the treatment options for canine constipation. Remember to consult a veterinarian first before proceeding to any of these treatments.
