Bulldogs cover many different breeds, but among them, there are three which are commonly chosen as family pets: the English, French and American bulldog. The English bulldogs are known to be the oldest. They were originally bred to participate in a sport called bull baiting in the United Kingdom, which is where their name comes from. The American bulldogs, however, are much more similar to this early breed than the English bulldogs actually are. The French bulldog is a bulldog in miniature form, has neither the size nor strength of the English or American bulldogs, and is more at home in the lap of its owner, like a Chihuahua, than outside playing at some sport. Still, bulldogs share some family traits. They are bold, especially lively, and are known to possess a stubborn streak, which means that training them has to be managed early on, while they’re still puppies, by an experienced handler or breeder.
If what you desire is a strong, reliable companion as well as an affectionate one, then getting an American bulldog is the ideal choice. The American bulldogs are the largest variety, and can stand from around 22 to 28 inches high, where the maximum height of the English breed is 16 inches and the French is 12. American bulldogs weigh from 80 to 120 lbs, while the English weigh 50, and the French even markedly less than that. American bulldogs also have the longest life expectancy at 16 years.
You should remember, however, that training these dogs can be challenging, especially to an inexperienced owner, and that they are not very suitable to be the playmates of small children because they are strong and might end up unintentionally hurting them. It is therefore a good idea to start by getting yourself a bulldog while it’s still a puppy and raising it.
Here are a few notes on where you might want to look for your own American bulldog:
- If you have some friends or associates who keep American bulldogs as pets, you can ask them first in case they have puppies they can’t take care of and are therefore willing to part with. Most pet owners who are selling puppies are concerned about finding these puppies a place where they will be treated properly, so offering to buy one might come as a relief to your friend or associate. And since you know the person, he might even give you a discount and might be counted on to give out more honest answers to any questions you might have about proper dog care as compared to a commercial breeder.
- You can look at flyers or handbills. The tactic of using flyers is usually employed by people who are normal pet owners and have little money to advertise that they have puppies for sale. Find someone who has an American Bulldog for sale, and if the owner lives near your area, you can personally check to see the dog and make sure you get it healthy. You can also get your pet for a smaller price compared to what you would have been offered in pet stores.
- If you want a pet from a respectable English, American or French breeder, all you need is a good broadband or DSL service that can pass the speedtest to provide you with a decent Internet connection. You can check in sites like pets4you and PuppyFind, which can give you breeder listings, online offers, and information on puppy selection and care.
