So, what is the difference between drip irrigation and spray irrigation when you are talking about watering your flower bands or your shrubs? Well, spray irrigation uses spray heads. Now, they cover a wide amount of space. They could spray between six and 18 feet. Basically, what they are good for is if you got a large planting of flowers or perennials because all those plants are reasonably the same size and it can just cover that and it does not make sense to do drip irrigation when you got something like that. But where it does not makes sense to do spray irrigation and some of the cons to spray irrigation if you got different sizes of shrubs, the larger shrubs can sometimes block the spray that is going to the smaller shrubs. So, you are effectively wasting a whole bunch of spray because it is getting blocked by the larger shrubs and sometimes spray goes in a lot of different directions and you will end up watering places that you do not want to water. So, drip irrigation is pretty cool. It is localized watering. So, you basically got a pipe with attachments that come off to water at the root of each shrub. Now, this is great because there is no blockage. The shrubs do not steal water away from other shrubs and there is no waste of water. You are not watering areas that do not need to be watered. Drip irrigation tends to work the best when you are considering doing some mulching. So, whether it is bark or rocks or whatever, you can lay the pipe on top of the flowerbed and put in the drip and then cover it up with mulch, so you do not have to dig it in.
