Let's work with Quma on this stay command. Quma sit, good boy, that's a good boy, stay, good boy, that's a good boy, stay, that's a good, good, sit, stay, good boy. That's a very good boy. Stay. You will notice I am actually looking a little above his head and behind him and so directly at his face. Stay, good boy, that's a good boy. Let's try that from a slightly further distance, stay. Good, good boy. It's also nice to remember the dog and Iike people never hold the grudge. So you have to remember to keep your positive attitude even if the dog does not respond correctly each time. If you notice your attitude changing, it's a good idea to go ahead and stop the lesson and pick it up again later when you are feeling much better. Anytime that your dog does not stay, remember you be 100%, 100%. I want you to go back to a step to the last successful position that you were in when the dog was successful 100% of the time. Repractice the command five to ten times before moving on again. A trick of a trade with a stay command and just try to remember not to look directly at your dog while you are requiring him to be in the stay position. This might encourage him to come towards you. Also, try not to use your dog's name when commanding him or her to stay. Stay, good boy. That's a good stay, what a good boy. Once your dog has mastered this, you can mix it up a little bit, by sometimes requiring your dog to come and sit in front of you and other times, returning to your dog as I have just done. This way your dog will not anticipate that each time you command him to sit and stay, say you are going to require him to then come next. We teach the stay command because we want our dog to stay in a certain position when say we answer the doorbell or have dinner. This is a very useful command. It's also something you can integrate into your normal daily routine with your dog. When you feed your dog, you can ask your dog to sit and stay. Before you use your release word and let your dog know that he can proceed and eat. You can use this command every time you let your dog outside to go to the bathroom and certainly every time you take on or off your dog's leash. Training your dog to sit and stay before allowing him to go outside each time is teaching your dog not to go through any outside door without a specific command from you. This is helpful in that, when I am at home, I can walk out the front door and around the corner and out of side and neither of my dogs will pass through that doorway because they have not been released to do so. So when working with your dog in the training jump start, what you want to do is each time you go to approach the door, you will put your dog into a sit, good boy, stay and then open the door. Your dog should not move forward until you commanded him to do so. Okay. Okay.
