Welcome to body performance. I am Steve Terrano. Today, I would like to talk to you about low carb diets. They are big mystery and I am sure everybody has been on them but I am going to tell you why they work.
Low carb diets do not work because you are not eating carbohydrates, they work because you are eating fewer calories in the form of carbohydrates. You have to understand that fats, proteins and carbohydrates all have calories. Fats have nine calories per gram. Carbohydrates and proteins have four calories per gram. So if you were to cut out any of these foods in your diet, you would lose weight. So with the low carb diet, by the end of the day, you are simply eating less just like any other diet so they work.
Two good things about the low carb diet is this, number one, you do not have the mental sacrifice or anguish of other diets because the low carb diet, they will tell you eat all fat and proteins you want. You do not have the immediate knee jerk reaction of saying I cannot have any chocolate so you immediately do not eat chocolate. The other aspect is when you eat lots of fats and lots of proteins, they are very satisfying, you become full and you do not want any more. I am eating pork chops and there is one pork chop left, but I am full, I do not finish it. But I have always got room for coffee and dessert.
So those are the two aspects of a low carb diet that seem to work well. There is no mental aspect of not being able to eat and number two, proteins and fats are very filling so once you have eaten them, you are full, you do not crave anything else.
