How To Believe in God

“I don’t believe in God…” the man said to the elderly woman.

She laughed. “That’s okay, sonny. God believes in you.”

It’s a paraphrase of a scene from a Stephen King movie, one that I never finished watching, but the scene has never left me. I believe in God, in fact I believe in Jesus as the Son of God, but it hasn’t always been this way. After a childhood of being raised in the church, I found myself at a liberal arts college and academically deconstructing the Bible. I wanted to feel enlightened, but instead felt empty, like I had lost something. For the first time I understood the perspective of atheists—there is no God.

How To Know the Difference Between Atheist and Agnostic

People of faith will always have a hard time understanding why a fellow human being would choose to be either Atheist or Agnostic. That's OK. But there are vast differences between the beliefs and attitudes one can expect from either camp, and it's not accurate or fair to lump them together, though it is tempting.

What follows is a guide to understanding the difference between these two loaded A-words.

How To Be a Good Atheist

Many people cringe when they hear the word, "atheist." Atheists are assumed to be all-around bad people, and are sometimes even confused for devil worshipers. That is simply not the case. Free thinkers tend to be educated people who are very ethical in work and they tend to take morality very seriously, yet they are among the most discriminated-against belief group in existence. For those atheists who need some guidance in being a good person, along with anyone else who may wish to use this how-to, I offer you “How To Be A Good Atheist.”

How To Understand the Views of Atheists, Agnostics and Theists

Atheists believe that a superbeing named God does not exist; agnostics believe that nothing can be proved about the existence of God; and theists believe that a divine being named God does exist. It appears that atheists and agnostics are on the same side, although atheists tend to have a strong view. Theists are on the other side. All these views differ in order to prove whether God exists or not.

Let us consider these views with respect to Vedic philosophy. The earliest philosophy of mankind (which flourished in ancient India) is called Vedic philosophy. The entire philosophy may be summarized in a few lines, which run as follows -- Brahman is the ultimate Reality; the world is ultimately false and the individual soul (atman) is not different from Brahman. In Sanskrit language, Brahman means 'the great.'

How To Enjoy Christmas as an Atheist

The holidays are drawing near, and it is a very special time for many people, including Atheist and agnostic people. There is a section of the non-religious community that believes that Christmas time is reserved for Christians. That isn't the case. Though Christmas is a contraction meaning “Christ's Mass," it is predated by many different winter celebrations. Saturnalia, celebrated by the Romans on approximately December 17 through 23rd, commemorated the dedication of the temple of the god, Saturn. They then celebrated Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, "the birthday of the unconquered sun," on December 25th. In late December to early January, the Scandinavian pagans celebrated Yule, honoring Thor, the God of Thunder.
