One can have everything in this world but still may feel incomplete. There might be various reasons involved and surely, one of those is a distant relationship with God. Countless people would say that God seems to be an aloof, distant figure, an impersonal "First Cause." And the idea of getting closer to God may seem disquieting, even frightening to them. However, we must admit that our future depends upon our getting closer to God. As to what Jesus said in John 17:3, "This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God." This kind of knowledge is more than just the ability to learn or recite facts. However, this involves cultivating a relationship with God by becoming his friend. Far from being unapproachable, God invites us to seek and really find him for he is not far off from each one of us, as what Acts 17:27 say.
Step 1:

Come to know God. Look at the sky at night; you'll see God's creation. Everywhere you look, you'll see God's work of art. All of these are God's expression of love to humans. However, you need to know more about God than creation alone can reveal. Do you want to see God's diary? Then try to read one of the most sacred books in history: the Bible. This book reveals so many things about God. It says that God has a name. Please read Psalm 83:18 and Psalm 100:3. The bible also says that God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness and truth. Reading the Bible is one important way to get closer to God.

Step 2:

Make Bible reading pleasurable. Obviously, the Bible consists of so many mini books, and is long to read. Some would say that reading the Bible is boring. However, the Bible is God's revelation to mankind. And reading it should not be drudgery. To make it more interesting, try to picture the setting and put yourself there, visualize what you read. And after reading, try to see what the account teaches about God. Also try reading it regularly, even for just 15 minutes a day.

Step 3:

Pray. Communication is important for friends -- it's the same with God. Prayer is one tool to talk to him. And we can gladly talk to him anytime and anywhere. God is the hearer of prayer. He listens to whatever we say in prayer. And in praying we must consider the model prayer Jesus Christ provided us in Mathew 6:9-13. Remember that supplication along with thanksgiving is also an important part of prayer. It's unnecessary to address God with fancy or pretentious language. Let him know your feelings, your concerns. In prayer, we can take refuge from the daily hardships we encounter. Ask for help, for protection and thank him daily for the gift of life. When prayer becomes a regular part of your life, it can bring you into a close and happy relationship with God.

It is our responsibility to maintain a close relationship to God and won't let anyone or anything rob us from that connection. We must also be assured that god promises his unfailing support to us. In time of trouble, we can search through that sacred book. Above all, remember that God has all the answers and doing the measures above will truly make God's heart rejoice. It is truly rewarding to be God's friends.
