The Bible refers to God in three forms: God the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. These three make up The Holy Trinity. The Bible also indicates that there is only one God. This may seem a bit confusing, so here are some things to consider when trying to understand The Holy Trinity.
- The word trinity is derived from two separate words: the word 'tri' (meaning three) and the word 'unity' (meaning oneness).
- There is only one God. The Father, Son and the Holy Spirit should not be thought of as three separate Gods, as they are rather the three forms in which this one God can present himself. Also realize that any one of these forms, alone, is still completely God.
- A helpful analogy: H2O can exist in three forms; water, ice, and steam. Each one is still composed of H20.
- The Bible supports these beliefs. Here are some scriptures that support this notion of God being one in trinity:
- (John 10:30) Jesus said: "I and the Father are one".
- (John 14:9) "He who has seen me has seen the father," said Jesus.
- (Matthew 1:20) Jesus said: "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit."
