Walking the path of the Shaman is not a duty for those weak in character. It is not to be treated like Wicca, paganism or any other neo-religion. Shamanism contains the oldest beliefs and practices known to mankind. It involves many trials, tribulations, and troubles that any normal person could not withstand. Before you can determine if the path of the Shaman is the one you are indeed already on, you must understand shamanistic beliefs and practices.

  • Brief Overview of Shamanistic Beliefs - Shamans are said to be chosen at birth by the spirits, but it is not until later in life that they become aware of their potential. Shamans usually find their potential through near-death experiences which is most commonly through sickness. After recovering, the young shaman will start hearing spirits and will learn to communicate with said spirits. He will be a reborn creature, one of light and greatness. Shamans commune with the spirits and define their will for the greater good of the community! Shamans are known as protectors and leaders of their communities.  It is egocentric in belief, so a strong sense of will is required of those that are to walk the Path of the Shaman.
  • Shamanism Practices - Shamans on the path will have connections to certain animals or totems. These animals are said to be sent by the spirits to help the Shaman protect the community and to help the Shaman himself by allowing the Shaman to draw off its power. The Shaman and his totems share similarities in personality and function. A Shaman connected to the Fox totem is a sly, fast and intuitive man, while those connected to the Skunk are usually underdogs in society and misunderstood by their peers. The young Shaman's totems are not chosen by the Shaman, but the Shaman is chosen by the totem. The most common or sought after totems are: wolf, eagle, coyote and falcon . Another power of the Shaman is the dream journey. The dreaming power of the Shaman is his most powerful tool. It is believed that through this dream-like state, the Shaman can communicate to the spirits the needs of his community. Some cultures would use hallucinogens to induce the journey, while it is more accepted in modern times to drum journey.
  • To Walk with the Shaman - Since most people do not travel to Mongolia, learning if you are a Shaman can be a problem.  Learning the ways of the Shaman, though, is not as difficult as it sounds.  To seek your path, you must seek an Elder Shaman, who will help you seek your totems and guide you on your Path.  This can also be a difficult task.  Check your local new-age bookstore for literature and do not be afraid to ask around!  The shop keeper might be an Elder Shaman themselves!  Most likely, if not, they can point you in the right direction.  There is also, albeit not always correct, wealth of information across the Internet that you can possibly draw some insight and understanding in the basic principles of Shamanism. You may also befriend other Shamans on social networking sites.  To be a Shaman is to be a beacon of your community and a solver of issues.  Do only good and lead those around you to greatness!
