Meditation: The Avenue to Enlightenment

What is meditation? Meditation is man listening to God. How do we meditate? Follow these simple steps and you will be on your way to a deep peaceful meditation. Enlightenment is what comes with a good meditation. You see, prayer is man talking to God and meditation is man listening to God. You are "enlightened" when you hear that still small voice of God during meditation, or shortly thereafter, giving you insight into what is best in your life. Don't worry about it. Don't even search for it. It will come naturally with a successful meditation.

  1. Lie down or sit in a comfortable position. You will want to wear comfortable clothing that is not constricting in any way.
  2. Put on some soothing soft instrumental music. There are several good CDs available. Some of my favorites are "The Celtic Circle," a compilation, "My Secret Heart" by Michael Whalen, "Mythodea" by Vangelis, and "Love Songs and Lullabies" by Jim Brickman.
  3. Close your eyes and let your thoughts drift away. It is important to understand that in order to achieve a good meditation, you should achieve a level of nothingness. If random thoughts about whether or not you paid the electric bill or that you need to change the oil in the car come into your mind, just let them drift in and drift back out. No worries. Set a kitchen timer for 15 minutes and let the world do its own thing for those 15 minutes.
  4. Begin pranic breathing. Pranic breathing is like breathing in God. The slow controlled form of breathing helps to enlist the level of nothingness required for a successful meditation. Breathe in slowly through your nose for the count of 7, hold the breathe for 2 seconds, and then let out the breath through whistle-shaped lips for the count of 7, pause for 2 seconds and repeat over and over. You have now learned pranic breathing.
  5. Start stretching. Start stretching and relaxing each muscle. Begin with your feet and work your way up to your head. You want to be completely relaxed.
  6. Concentrate. Concentrate on your breathing and the purpose of your meditation.
  7. End your meditation. When your timer goes off, you know it is time to end your meditation. Slowly begin to stretch your arms and legs, moving your body from side to side. Begin your pranic breathing which you have probably stopped. Give yourself a few moments to breathe and "come to." Whala.....You have just completed your first meditation. Do you feel enlightened yet? Don't worry. It will come when you least expect it.

The more you practice meditation, the more you will get from it. Try to do your meditation every day at the same place and the same time if possible. You create an energy in the area where you do your meditation so the next time you meditate in that same place, it will become easier and easier to achieve a meditative state.
