In the Beginning God Created
- The Bible states that all things exist by direct creation of God. There are varied opinions among religious and non-religious people, as to how the earth was created, including the opinion that says God used an evolutionary process to evolve lower life forms into more advanced ones. They believe that lower species of animals and humans became the higher level of species that we see today. The account of the creation of living things recorded in the Bible however, states that God created all living things in their present forms. He may have also created into all things, the ability to adapt as they have the need to do so. For example animals grow heavier coats when colder temperatures occur and will shed those coats as warmer weather arrives. This would not be the same as an evolutionary process whereby they advance to higher species over time. Bible creation teaches that all living things are presently in relatively the same form they were originally created in, apart from any environmental conditions that might have affected them.
- God's creative power and that he used to bring order to the earth and universe was released by his spoken words. As God begins the creation process for the world he would place the first man Adam as ruler; he speaks words that cause all of the things in the world to come into existence and to become properly in order. We see the words "God said" many times in the first chapters of the book of Genesis that give the creation account. For example, God first speaks light into existence on a world that is covered with darkness by saying "Let there be light." He then abates a large covering of water, off of the face of the earth, so that dry land appears and also separates it into bodies of water that stand apart from the land and that also form clouds in the sky. He afterward creates the plant and animal life and all other forms of life by speaking them into existence or by announcing that the earth would begin producing them from that point forward.
- The creation account lists six days of creation for the present world that mankind has dominion over. While it is believed by many Bible scholars that there may have been a world in existence before that which was created for Adam and Eve (mankind), the account in Genesis lists all of the things that are presently on the earth that he placed man and woman in authority over. God states in Genesis 1:26 (KJV) - And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. By placing man in authority over the earth, he is directly responsible for most of what occurs on it. The Bible also details the fact that the negative things that transpire on this planet are a result of mans disobedient actions toward the authority God granted him. In Genesis 3:17 says - And unto Adam he said.... cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life... The curse, according to the Bible, remains on the earth at present but will at some point be removed at a time set by God. Romans 8:22 says - For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain...
- The book of Revelation states that God will someday re-create the earth again. When Adam and Eve broke their covenant with God by committing a sin of disobedience to his will for them in ruling the created earth in a righteous manner, the earth itself suffered the consequences of this "sin". Because of this, things began to occur on the earth that brought pain and suffering to mankind. God immediately began a new plan for mankind that would eventually remove this "curse" from the earth. God also promises to someday renovate the present earth, so that it can be re-created as a place of complete righteousness, on which pain and suffering will no longer exist. In Revelation 21:1 it says - And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. It states in Revelation 22:3 - And there shall be no more curse... It further states in Revelation 21:2-3 that God will take residence with man on the newly created earth - I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. (NIV)
Many people who believe the Bible to be God's revealed word to mankind, also believe he directly created all things and not through a process that took millions of years. Many Bible believers also look forward to the time promised in scripture of a new earth for mankind, with the full presence of God and with no further suffering in the world.
