How To Understand God

Using Your Common Sense to Understand God

To understand God, one must have, first of all, an open mind. Then you must read and understand scripture. And last but not least, use your common sense. God is to each individual what he or she perceives God to be. So make your perception a good one. Remember that God is good. God is not spiteful and does not seek vengeance. God does not punish us for our screw-ups. God forgives. So if you can follow the 4 main ideas that follow to develop your perception of God, you will be well on your way to a happy and healthy relationship with your God and yourself.

  1. God is the Almighty, the Creator, The Ruler of the Universe, The Infinite, The Divine. There are many names that God is called and depending on what language you speak, there are names from that particular language. The Hebrew name for God is Yahweh. In Italian, it is Dio. So you see, it doesn't really matter what we call God. What does matter is that we call God.
  2. To understand God, we must ask ourselves the question, "Who is God?" First of all, God is Spirit. "For God is Spirit and those who worship him must worship him in Spirit and in truth" (Matt.4:24). So let's roll that around a minute. God is Spirit. Spirit is everywhere, and has the ability to be anywhere and everywhere. So God is not just "up there," as we hear so many say. God is here, everywhere. Wow. So if you are doing something you shouldn't be, don't think that God can't see you (LOL). God is everywhere. And God lives within us. "Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" (1st Cor. 3:16). Double wow. So we are walking around with the Spirit of God inside of us. Totally cool!
  3. Whose image are we created in? God created man in his own image and his "image" is spirit. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Gen. 1:27). Male and female both are in God's image. So God's Spirit is both male and female. It is a person's spirit that God respects. For example, God does not think more of us if we have a lot of money or not.
  4. What power do we call on when we need help? We call on the power within. That God within. If we need help with courage to overcome some obstacle in our life, God. We have too many bills and not enough money? God will help us find a way to know that we are doing our best and feel comfortable with the decisions we make.

So now we know that God has many names. God is Spirit and God is everywhere, including within us. Not just in the sky or at a church but within each and every one of us. God is all and all is God. God is everywhere present. We are one with God as long as we "know" we are one with God and we can do anything. So, next time we meet up with some grumpy person who is living the illusion that everything is bad, remember that God dwells within that person as well. Bless him and be on your way.

This article spells it all out. One thing I can add onto it: God will always be there for us no matter what. Understanding Him will enlighten everybody's hearts and minds to our true existence and the source of everything good.

What you know about God is perfectly in conformity with the knowledge found in the Upanishads. Very good article indeed.
