The rules of hockey may at first seem complex and confusing. By understanding certain calls such as offsides and icing, however, one can easily master the basics of the game.

To win the game:

One team must score more goals than the opposing team.

To score:

A goal is scored each time the puck goes past the goal line of the opposing team's net.
A goal does not count if it is purposely kicked in by the foot, thrown in by the hand, or hit in by a high stick.
A goal accidentally deflected off of a player does count.

If you have enough space in your backyard this winter you could actually build your own private hockey rink. You won't have to wait your turn at the crowded local rink for time on the ice to hone those hockey skills. Get a group of friends to join you to practice those plays or just practice your skating. Building your backyard rink isn't difficult; it only requires a few materials from the hardware and the help of Mother Nature.

Ice hockey like any other sport requires passion and dedication. You may be a parent who sees great potential in his or her child's hockey skills and may want to plan the child's hockey career at an early stage. Or you may have been playing hockey since you were a child and think that the skills you have are good enough for the pros. There a few things you need to consider though before dropping everything else to become a professional hockey player. For example size is a factor and agents are looking for big players who can skate well. If you are not that big but possess exceptional skills on the ice then maybe you could get drafted for that alone. The route to becoming a professional hockey player takes a lot of work and determination.
