It is important to buy fastpitch softball equipment that properly fits the person who will be using it.  Equipment that will be needed when starting out in fastpitch softball is a glove, cleats and a helmet.  Other softball equipment can be bought over time. Here's how to know the best gear to get.

When buying a fastpitch softball glove, choose a glove that fits the player's hand well.  The softball glove that you choose will depend on the position that you will be playing.  A catcher or first baseman will want to choose a glove that is specifically made for that position.  A player playing a position in the infield will want to purchase a glove that is generally between 11 and 12 1/2 inches in length and has a shallow pocket, which will allow for faster retrieval of the softball from the glove.  An outfielder will want to buy a fastpitch softball glove that is 12 1/2 inches or longer with a deep pocket to catch fly balls more easily.  When buying a glove for the outfield position, it is best if it has a closed web.  A closed web allows the player to easily block the sun when catching fly balls.

When buying a fastpitch softball helmet, make sure it meets the NOCSAE standards.  The helmet should have a label on it stating that it does.  Most fastpitch leagues require helmets to have a facemask attached to them as well.  Make sure that the helmet fits the player's head securely and offers adequate padding.  If the team wears shorts, you may also want to buy sliding pads and sliding shorts to protect your legs when sliding.

The type of fastpitch softball cleat that one will choose will depend on the playing surface as well as league regulations.  Most leagues do not allow cleats with metal spikes; therefore, rubber cleats should be purchased instead.  Choose the style and brand of cleat that fits your foot the best.

When buying a fastpitch softball bat, choose one that is the correct size for the player that will be using it.  Bottle barrel bats are recommend for fastpitch softball because they offer a larger sweet spot.  Buy a softball bat that is made from state of the art materials like aluminum, titanium or composite materials.
