If you plan to participate in the sport of football, you will want to have all the necessary equipment needed before hand. There are some essentials, and many more items that can be purchased as accessories if you want or need them.

First you will need a football! It's the oval shaped ball, that is sometime referred to as a pigskin. It is made in a cylinder shape so can be thrown in a spiral to be thrown long distances. It's almost always made of leather although some children's versions are made of hard plastic. The size of the football you'll need depends on what level of the sport you'll be playing. For a back yard game with family, just about any ball will do. For a competitive game where the score will be kept, you will want a regulation sized football.

If you will be participating in tackle football, as opposed to flag football, you will need a helmet to protect your head from injuries. The helmets of today have a thick foam padding and heavy duty plastic for durability. They are designed to withstand rugged play while protecting your head. Most helmets have a grill on the front made of either hard plastic or metal. This helps protect your face and is an important part of avoiding a broken nose or other facial injuries that can be serious.

The proper athletic shoes are an essential for being able to play the sport correctly.  They help with mobility and speed, and can keep you from slipping on a wet field. They come in a variety of styles, but almost all have cleats on the soles. Again, depending on which type of football you are playing, the rules differ on whether you will need plastic or metal for your cleats. You will want to purchase a shoe that helps protect your ankles, but is light enough to allow you to speed down the field. One hint for playing on a wet field is to apply longer cleats to the bottom of your shoes.

Shoulder and leg pads should be the next thing on your list.  Shoulder pads are one of the most important parts of protection in football gear. They are made to absorb the shock of hits you may receive on your chest, shoulders and back. They also help avoid neck injuries.  Shoulder pads usually come in two styles. The first is the flat type, and the second is the cantilevered pad which is heavier. Leg pads are made to protect your thighs and legs. Thigh pads have thick padding that is worn underneath your uniform.

Lastly, you will want to purchase a mouth guard. These come in all shapes, sizes and styles. Most need to be held under hot water for a few minutes, then placed in your mouth to mold to your mouth shape. To keep from biting your tongue, the side of your mouth and also to help protect your teeth, always wear a mouth guard. It is mandatory in most contact football games.
