The most important equipment a hockey player has, regardless of his age, are the pads.  Pads cover a player from neck to ankle, leaving nearly nothing exposed and helping the player to remain agile and flexible while considerably improving the player's safety.

The first step to buying pads is making sure you have the right size.  While most sporting equipment allows for some wiggle room or room to grow, hockey pads are not quite the same. Many players have had to purchase new equipment mid-season because of a growth spurt or weight gain. In order to make sure your pads fit, make sure to always try them on with a size larger, a size smaller, and the size you believe you are looking for. This ensures the right fit and the correct protection.

Getting help is another important step in buying pads.  It's a good idea to bring another player familiar with your pad needs, a coach, or a knowledgeable parent with you to purchase your pads.  Doing this gives you a second set of eyes and lets someone make sure all the necessary gaps are covered, especially around the back where you might not be able to check even with the assistance of a mirror.

Most hockey stores also have people on staff who can help you with your pad needs.  In many cases, you can bring your current pads in to see if they are still meeting the needs of protection and flexibility.  Many stores also offer swap meets sometime during the year, where you can trade in old pads or other equipment for new ones or trade with other players for their gently used equipment.  Always make sure your pads are clean before bringing them to an event like this.

Finally, find a brand you trust.  There are many brands of hockey pads out there.  Some offer more protection at the price of flexibility, others allow a full range of motion but leave you vulnerable where you might most need protection.  It is important to remember that buying a specific brand of one pads for one part of your body does not mean you need a full set of matching pads.  It is okay to mix and match to get what feels the best and for the pads which offer the best protection.

Hockey pads, like good defense, are an important part of your game and an important way to stay safely in the game.
