When choosing a softball bat, there are several factors to consider. The sheer number of bats to choose from can be daunting. If you are armed with a few important facts, you will make a well-informed decision.
Step 1 – Know the age, height and weight of the batter.
Consider the size and strength of the batter. Many manufacturers offer sizing charts based on the age and size of the batter. Softball bats are measured in both length and ounces. They typically range in length from 24” to 34”. The weights of softball bats vary from approximately 18 ounces, to 30 ounces or more. A smaller batter will choose a shorter, lighter bat. A larger, stronger batter will choose a longer, heavier bat. A guideline for choosing the right length is to stand with your arms down at your side. A bat placed on the floor should come approximately up to your wrist. A guideline for choosing the right weight is to hold the bat out at arm's length. If your arm becomes too fatigued after holding the bat out for 20-30 seconds, the bat is too heavy.
Step 2 – Determine the type of softball being played.
Based on Step One, a batter will find a range of bat lengths and weights that feel comfortable. Consider whether the batter will be playing fast pitch or slow pitch softball. The weight of the bat contributes to the amount of power the batter experiences. For slow-pitch softball, a batter will typically choose a heavier bat. In slow-pitch, the swing must supply the majority of the power. A heavier bat helps accomplish this. For fast-pitch softball, a batter will typically choose a lighter bat. With the higher speed pitch, the batter must be able to achieve a faster bat speed through the hitting zone.
Step 3 – Choose your grip.
This is based on personal preference. Choose a rubber or cushioned grip on your softball bat for a grip designed to absorb some of the shock of impact. This is especially important for younger or less skilled batters who are less consistent with their hitting skills. Choose leather or synthetic leather for a standard, steady grip.
In closing, budget is always a consideration, and you will find a huge variety of prices. Whatever you choose, know that many softball leagues have very specific rules for softball bat specifications. Be sure that the softball bat you are choosing meets these requirements.
