One of the most invigorating adventures is to go Alpine skiing. Alpine skiing is also known as downhill skiing. For both the novice and experienced skier, it is quite an adrenalin rush. If you wish to try Alpine skiing for the first time, the first things that you will need to learn are how to stop and how to get up. Every novice to the Alpine skiing sport should take a lesson for beginners just so that you can safely learn how to stop without injuring yourself.
When you take a lesson on your first trip up to an Alpine skiing resort, the instructor will basically teach you a technique known as snow plowing. When you snow plow going down a beginners' slope, you will take both of your skis and point the tips toward each other. You will, in essence, be forming the shape of a "V" when you do this. Now at the same time that you are forming a "V" with your skis, you will also mimic a sitting down motion. With the shins of your legs still perpendicular to your skis, you will perform a squatting motion. This will put a lot of pressure on the inside edges of your skis and slow you down. This will also put a lot of pressure on your thighs. You will think that your legs are on fire. At this point, you may want to just fall. Go ahead, it's quite all right. It can actually be a little fun; after all, you are just falling on snow. Please remember not to fall on rocks and boulders -- this would not be fun.
This is when you will need to learn the next basic lesson of Alpine skiing. The next basic lesson to learn is how to get up. Once you fall, you need to position yourself so that both of your skis are perpendicular to the downward slope of the mountain. Once you have your skis in position, make sure that they are not crossed. To maintain control, make sure that your boots are directly under your torso. Now you take your poles and stick the tips into the snow right at your uphill hip. If you turn your head away from your poles, you should be looking down the mountain. If this is correct, you simply grab the handles of your poles and pull yourself up.
Once you have mastered the methods of snow plowing and getting up, you are now ready to learn to traverse down the mountain. After you learn to traverse, you will truly be ready to really enjoy Alpine skiing.
