Beginning to learn tricks in BMX is no different from doing the same in other sports, such as skateboarding, roller blading, or even learning tricks on a scooter.  It takes long, hard commitment.  No one starts off on a bunny hop, in fact most people start off on the ground.

However, if one is serious on learning the how to of BMX tricks for beginners, than no one can ever go wrong with the bunny hop.  The bunny hop is a classic trick.

Firstly, in most wheeled sports speed is your best friend.  In skateboarding and in BMX this is a popular phrase.  In order to achieve most tricks in either sport this must be known.  Anyone attempting to attack this trick for the first time should begin at a moderate speed, not at a slow pace.  While riding at a decent speed, be sure to keep the arms and legs bent.  This is so you can be more flexible in order to get a better pop [pop is a term that refers to the action of lifting quickly off of the ground using your sports instrument].  Begin to lift your bike's front end off the ground, at this point your arms and legs are still well bent.  Continuing to pull back, be sure that now you are straightening your arms as well as your legs.  As you continue your arms and legs are now even straighter and your legs should be close to the handle bars.  Pull your entire mass of weight upward as the bike begins to lift.  Once in the air give your body a slight bend.  This is to prepare for the landing that will soon follow.  Once you feel you're at your highest point ,start bending your arms and legs even more.  Begin to flatten the bike keeping a slight slant to your back tire so to create a softer landing.  Once you have landed it is then official.  You have done your first bunny hop.  This trick is common in biking sports in general.  Not just BMX, however, you will see a lot of BMX bikers doing this trick especially because their are so many tricks that require knowing it.

An even simpler trick that any one can learn is called the manual.  If you have heard this word before, you may have heard it skateboarding, or being around people that do.  The original name for a manual in BMX is called the wheelie.  A trick involving the front or back wheels of the bike to be off the ground for a period in time while the rider is riding.  This trick is truly elementary for any rider to learn; although it has seemed to baffle bikers for years.  It's preformed by thrusting your weight onto the back of your bike, then allowing yourself to coast or simply ride smoothly on a coarse.  A manual can be let down at any time.  Also in contests the manual is used to link tricks together.  So it's not just basic, but it has a very important purpose to those who are constantly in contests.
