If one wishes to do parkour, one must first understand the philosophy of parkour. Understand "l'art du déplacement," which is French for "the art of movement." It is more of a life style than a sport, it is a philosophy, an art. To get from one place to another as smoothly and as quickly as possible, using only the human body. This efficiency comes from attaining an understanding of their obstacles, overcoming and surpassing them. It is through this they find their pleasure.

All you need to get started in parkour is a pair of shoes, other than that, no equipment is needed. Some people will develop a further interest into it and acquire parkour accessories. Some of these include $120 shoes with a special bottom padding, adding extra protection for their feet. There are knee and wrist supporters that can be easily purchased at a sports store. Grip shoes can be useful if you think you might go running on walls. While all of these parkour accessories can be useful, none of them are needed. Just put on some shoes and go out running.

The vault is the traceurs (a practitioner of parkour) main mode of passage. Many variations of the same idea have been imagined. The basic foundation of the many styles of movement come back to stepping into and out of the jump while raising your hips over an object. You will normally place one or both hands upon the obstacle and transfer up and over with your shoulders. Use your toes, you'll get a better flow.

There are many ways to vault, one of the basic ways is called the monkey vault. When you try to do this parkour movement, you should put your hands on the object before you actually jump it. Run towards it and put both hands on the object before taking off. You'll be slightly in the air, push down with your shoulders and lean your head forward. After that, take your feet through.

For the Kong vault you will punch out with your hands, flinging your body towards the obstacle. Dive at it with your body somewhat horizontal (can be off in either direction), put your hands down and go into the monkey style by putting both hands down and swinging your feet through. Step out when you land and continue the flow.

After many styles of the vault have been practiced and understood, the parkour initiate can move on to more intimidating activities like wall running.
